Overview:
Nevada Health Centers, Inc., founded in 1977, has clinic sites throughout the state.  In an effort to further enhance the services provided to its patients, Nevada Health Centers, Inc. has recently opened a WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Clinic in the same complex as their North Las Vegas Medical Center, which provides pediatric and family care.  Additionally, the WIC NLV Clinic is located close to the Obstetrics and Gynecology practice.  This affords convenient access to related services to patients meeting eligibility requirements for WIC.

Population Served:

The WIC target population are low-income, nutritionally at risk:

bulletPregnant women (through pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after birth or after pregnancy ends).
bulletBreastfeeding women (up to infant’s 1st birthday)
bulletNon-breastfeeding postpartum women (up to 6 months after the birth of an infant or after pregnancy ends)
bulletInfants (up to 1st birthday). WIC serves 45 percent of all infants born in the United States.
bulletChildren up to their 5th birthday.

Services Provided:  The WIC Clinic provides regular review of the growth and basic health and nutritional needs of pregnant, post-partum, breastfeeding women and their young children.  As part of this process, families are given nutritional education, referred to a Nutritionist for counseling, referred to needed social services as well as referred to appropriate medical practices for immunizations, pediatric care or obstetrical care.

Benefits:
The following benefits are provided to WIC participants:

bulletSupplemental nutritious foods
bulletNutrition education and counseling at WIC clinics
bulletScreening and referrals to other health, welfare and social services

Length of Participation: WIC is a short-term program.  Therefore, a participant will "graduate" at the end of one or more certification periods.  A certification period is the length of time a WIC participant is eligible to receive benefits.  Depending on whether the individual is pregnant, postpartum, breastfeeding, an infant, or a child, an eligible individual usually receives WIC benefits from 6 months to a year, at which time she/he must re-apply.
