Overview:
Nevada Health Centers, Inc., founded in 1977, has clinic sites
throughout the state. In an effort to further enhance the
services provided to its patients, Nevada Health Centers, Inc. has
recently opened a WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Clinic in the
same complex as their North Las Vegas Medical Center, which provides
pediatric and family care. Additionally, the WIC NLV Clinic is
located close to the Obstetrics and Gynecology practice. This
affords convenient access to related services to patients meeting
eligibility requirements for WIC.
Population Served:
The WIC target population are low-income, nutritionally at
risk:
 | Pregnant women (through pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after
birth or after pregnancy ends). |
 | Breastfeeding women (up to infant’s 1st birthday)
|
 | Non-breastfeeding postpartum women (up to 6 months after the
birth of an infant or after pregnancy ends) |
 | Infants (up to 1st birthday). WIC serves 45
percent of all infants born in the United States. |
 | Children up to their 5th birthday. |
Services Provided:
The WIC Clinic
provides regular review of the growth and basic health and nutritional
needs of pregnant, post-partum, breastfeeding women and their young
children. As part of this process, families are given
nutritional education, referred to a Nutritionist for counseling,
referred to needed social services as well as referred to appropriate
medical practices for immunizations, pediatric care or obstetrical
care.

Length of
Participation: WIC is a short-term program.
Therefore, a participant will "graduate" at the end of one or more
certification periods. A certification period is the length
of time a WIC participant is eligible to receive benefits.
Depending on whether the individual is pregnant, postpartum,
breastfeeding, an infant, or a child, an eligible individual
usually receives WIC benefits from 6 months to a year, at which
time she/he must re-apply.

Funding: WIC is
funded through the United States Department of Agriculture. The
State of Nevada, Department of Human Resources, Health Division,
Bureau of Family Health Services contracts with providers to deliver
WIC services to communities in Nevada.
