Overview:
Nevada Health Centers, Inc. (NVHC) was founded in 1977 as
Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and currently has 21
clinical sites throughout Nevada. Cambridge Family Health Center
opened its doors to serve the community with quality health care
in 2002. It is located in Las Vegas, which is in Clark County.
In an effort to further enhance the services provided to its
patients, Nevada Health Centers, Inc. has recently opened a WIC
(Women, Infants and Children) Clinic in the same complex as their
Cambridge Family Health Center, which provides pediatric and family
care. The WIC office opened October 10, 2005.
Population Served:
The WIC target population are low-income, nutritionally at
risk:
 | Pregnant women (through pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after
birth or after pregnancy ends). |
 | Breastfeeding women (up to infant’s 1st
birthday) |
 | Non-breastfeeding postpartum women (up to 6 months after the
birth of an infant or after pregnancy ends) |
 | Infants (up to 1st birthday). WIC serves 45
percent of all infants born in the United States. |
 | Children up to their 5th birthday. |
Services Provided—
The WIC Clinic provides regular review
of the growth and basic health and nutritional needs of pregnant,
post-partum, breastfeeding women and their young children. As part of
this process, families are given nutritional education, referred to a
Nutritionist for counseling, referred to needed social services, as
well as referrals to appropriate medical practices for immunizations,
pediatric care or obstetrical care.

Length of
Participation: WIC is a short-term program.
Therefore, a participant will "graduate" at the end of one or more
certification periods. A certification period is the length
of time a WIC participant is eligible to receive benefits.
Depending on whether the individual is pregnant, postpartum,
breastfeeding, an infant, or a child, an eligible individual
usually receives WIC benefits from 6 months to a year, at which
time she/he must re-apply.
Staffing:
WIC Cambridge is staffed with one Dietician, one
WIC Supervisor, one WIC Screener and five WIC Workers.

WIC is funded
through the United States Department of Agriculture. The State of
Nevada, Department of Human Resources, Health Division, Bureau of
Family Health Services contracts with providers to deliver WIC
services to communities in Nevada.
