Located on the banks of the Humboldt River,
Carlin is the oldest community in Elko County. Situated in a
valley, the area is lush with natural springs and meadows. In the
early 1800’s, immigrants bound of California used the area as a
resting stop. Also due to its location Carlin became the
western terminus for the Central Pacific Railroad. Extreme cold
winters enabled 45,000 tons of ice to be harvested, providing
refrigeration for approximately 300 cars daily, carrying fruits and
vegetables to the eastern marked. Chinese culture was also an integral
part of Carlin’s history, and due to the large Chinese
population, the area was originally named “Chinese Gardens.” The City
of Carlin was incorporated in 1971 and has a mayor-council form
